Having a vegetarian diet can benefit your intestines within a short span of time. It can increase the count of certain probiotic strains of Lactobacillus and Streptococcus and lower the population of disease-causing bacteria within the gut. Plant-based foods are rich in polyphenols, which cause an increase in the number of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species. A vegetarian diet is also high in prebiotic fiber content. Dietary fibers not just add bulk to the diet, but also play a vital role in maintaining digestive health.
